LOW VISION SERVICES:
Overland Eye Associates maintains an area dedicated to provision of specialized services to patients suffering from sub-normal levels of vision. Patients with low vision can be evaluated at our office and provided with all the benefits of low vision rehabilitation. Specific services available include:

Comprehensive low vision consultative evaluation: A thorough approximately one-hour examination consisting of some or all of the following procedures:

  1. Careful functional case history and goal establishment
  2. Measurement of exact levels of residual vision, both central and peripheral
  3. Review and assessment of optical aids, eyeglasses used in the past
  4. Eye health assessment, confirmation of cause of vision loss
  5. Low vision trial frame refraction – to determine if eyeglass correction/enhancement
    could be useful
  6. Determination of functional reading potential on enlarged paragraph charts
  7. Plotting of central visual field disturbance using special measuring grid
  8. Demonstration of full range of optical low vision aids, including spectacle, hand and stand magnifiers as well as telescopic units for distance vision tasks
  9. Presentation and trial of non-optical devices such as lighting, masking devices, large print materials, and various enlarged objects (eg. Large print checks, playing card, etc.) Also electronic technology can be of dramatic value (eg. Closed circuit television magnifiers) and is available for on-site demonstration.
  10. Patient education – thorough and specific explanation of the nature of their eye condition and how to learn to live with it and cope most effectively with it.
  11. Referral to related specialist who can assist in overall rehabilitation of the patient. These specialists include Orientation & Mobility, Rehabilitation Teaching, and Vision Technology Specialists. Etc.
  12. Provision of optical devices along with adjustment, fitting, training and necessary follow-up in the proper use and maintenance of this special equipment. The finest and latest in optical technology will be provided to give the best possible enhancement of vision performance

Dispensing/training session: Provided when optical or non-optical devices delivered for patient use. It is not uncommon that devices require a significant amount of practice to attain fluency and comfort. This important training will provide the maximum opportunity for success

Periodic re-evaluation: As a vision condition would change in the subsequent years, follow-up evaluation can serve to determine if updates or changes in the rehabilitative program would be useful.
