COMPREHENSIVE EYECARE: There is really no such thing as a “routine eye exam”. The reason for that is because every patient is a unique, special individual and at Overland Eye Associates we truly accept the privilege of caring for our patient’s eyes with careful attention. From the filling out of the first form, to the opening interview, to the doctor-patient interaction to the final selection and fitting of materials or eye therapy, we take special care in treating our patients as individuals deserving specific attention. Expect an eye examination to include elements from the following list:
- Medical case history
- Determination of primary visual needs
- Measurement of visual acuity, with and without correction
- Analysis of current eyeglass prescription
- Color vision testing
- Glaucoma screening test
- Blood pressure measurement
- Screening assessment of binocular vision
- Pupil reactions and eye muscle mobility
- Gross visual field assessment
- Determination of corneal curvature
- Refraction (determination of exact eyeglass/contact lens prescription)
- External assessment of eye health status
- Internal assessment of eye health status (to include pupil dilation when appropriate)
- Supplemental eye health tests when necessary (automated visual fields, ophthalmic photo documentation, etc.)
- Patient education – thorough explanation of the patient’s eye condition and appropriate management
- Recommendation of proper intervals of follow-up eye care
Every test is not performed on all patients of all ages at every visit, but a thorough and specific battery of tests will be performed to insure that that eyes are cared for properly. Sometimes additional, supplemental follow-up testing is scheduled to verify and continue to manage a particular eye condition.
After the eye examination is complete and refractive correction is required, the patient can either be fit with contact lenses or sent to the optical dispensary for eyeglass selection/fitting. |
